I can't remember the exact reasons not to cut back gray foliaged plants, but
it has something to do with moisture getting into the stems, thus rotting
the plants. I learned about not doing this from a number of well-known
gardeners in the mid-Atlantic region and since I started heeding this
advice, I haven't lost a plant to the winter weather. Kniphofia is another
plant better left until spring to do anything with.
