Friends bought a stainless steel drum composter - paid big bucks and it
didn't work for them so they lent it to us to try (we have a sunnier area)
and it didn't work well for us either.
I don't think there was allowance for enough air to get it and my DH found
it too heavy to turn.
I believe other brands may have a geared turning system.
The best compost we made was in a large circular tower of wire and we used a
lot of horse manure as well as prunings, weeds, grass and leaves. It was
easy to unhook the sides of the cylinder and move it and refill it - ie:
turning the compost. We've never had a hot enough compost to kill tomato
plants (VBG) so I guess it doesn't kill weeds either. We rely on a lot of
horse manure and put up with the weeds.
Just my Canadian 2 cents worth (and we all know that's not much!)
