Hi Bob,
I'd have to say that if I could only have one perennial to grow in the
spring, it would be Hepatica acutiloba. This has been a favorite of
mine for many years.

You'd never guess that those photos were taken against an old mulberry
tree not 10' away from the driveway at my parent's house... :)
They're easy to grow, but heat is probably their worst enemy. If you
have hot summers (probably not a problem in Canada) you need to make
sure that they get decent shade. Semi-rich soil is best, too...
