Re: Favorite Spring Perennials

Donna mentioned:

amaryllis, angel trumpets, sweet potato vines, ginger, banana
trees...

How many of these are winter hardy for you? When you say "amaryllis" are
you referring to the type usually sold around Christmas for pot culture?
I've heard that some folks in our area are successful at planting them
outside, but haven't talked to anyone who has actually done so. I also
heard that a variety of banana has been developed that is supposed to be
hardy in our area, but don't know any details.

I've tried tropical ginger a couple of times, but haven't been successful at
getting any blooms, although I have had some nice foliage. I also dug them
up for winter. I planted some in a sheltered spot this year and am going to
leave one out and see what happens.

I have some "hand-me-down" crinum; they get to be huge plants, and generally
bloom in mid-summer.
