Re: Favorite Spring Perennials

amaryllis, angel trumpets, sweet potato vines, ginger, banana
trees...

Nancy,

I have 15 amaryllis planted in my flower bed and they have been there
for years. they keep haveing babies and I just keep planting them
somewhere. I mulch in the winter.
never lost any of them, and yes they are the ones for Christmas. That's
how I got started with these plants. someone gave me one for Christmas
one year, didn't know what to do with it after, so just put it in the
ground in the spring, and was greatly surprised when it lived and
bloomed the next year I have most of them planted on the south side of
my house, but I also have probable 5 out in the open flower beds.

angel trumpets I cut them back and mulch deeply, then take the
cuttings and either put them in pots or back in the flower beds.
remember to mulch

sweet potato vine this is my first year for this one. I had it in a
pot, with begonias. I dug the potato up, stored it in peat in a small
card board box and put it in my basement for the winter. also I took
some of the cuttings and planted them in pots and put some in a jar of
water. we'll see if I have any come spring.

ginger this is also my first time for ginger. this was given to me
by a new friend for this list. she lives futher south from me. after I
set these out, I have had new babies (one for each plant) she sent me
the white butterfly ginger and can't think of the other one. the white
butterfly has a bud, but we had 2 nights of frost, so I'm not sure
this one will bloom for me this time. I have mulched deeply.

banana trees this year we had 5, they didn't do very well, due to
the dry conditions. we usually dig these up every year, they are a lot
of trouble, but are beautiful for the landscape. we've never had
bananas, however my brother-in-law had one bunch on his tree, but they
never get ripe.

by the way I live in NE Mississippi about 110 miles southeast of
Memphis, TN. next to the AL. state line.

this is also gonna be my first year for the crinums, can't wait to see
how this they do, I may have to wait a couple of years to see them
bloom.
