Joanie, I have this in my garden which is zone 5 by the map but low & open 
which in reality is more zone 4.   It is well protected on the south side of a 
berm & the north side of my pond and does bloom. It do not cut it back in the 
fall but gently pull the dead after I have green growth in the spring.   I have 
had it for quite a few yrs & seems to take time just like the Hakonechloa 
'Aureola'
