My DH has tried to grow hops with very little success - he chooses the
slow growers and our season is too short. However, our neighbor (his
beer brewing friend) has them growing up the side of his house. He
attaches heavy-duty twine to eyelets at his eaves and strings them down
to stakes near the hops. The effect is similar to that of pole beans.
This keeps them from twining around other plants and keeps them growing
in an upward fashion. It also makes a nice little arbor to walk through.
Beware that he needs a 2 storey extension ladder to harvest the cones,
though. In a good season, the vines grow up over his roof! They are
incredibly vigorous and yes, will twine over anything!
