Hi Linda,
I believe the vine you are referring to is the Ipomoea coccinea, common names
Cardinal Climber or Cypress vine. It is a great performer in my garden year
round, however I live in Florida. The vine will freeze and usually does not
come back. It does self sow readily so that if it is well established before
frost, new plants will come up in the spring.
General care is very trouble free. It grows well in full sun or part shade,
water and fertilizer requirements are normal. Be careful not to overfertilize
as you will get lots of leaves and no flowers. Flowers are scarlet red
(although there is a white form, it is fairly rare) tubular and about an inch
across. Hummingbirds are very fond of the flowers.
The vine is generally considered a tender perennial and will easily reach 15
feet in a single season.
Good luck with your new acquisition,
Lauren
