Hello,
If you can go without using the bed for quite a while, you can use the "old
newspaper trick". Cover the affected area with several sheets of newspapers
(at least 10 for something as tough as mint). Make sure that you fully cover
the area and leave no spaces at all in between. Once you have the area cover
top it with some type of mulch to hold the papers in place. Leave the papers
and mulch in place until spring.
This trick also has the benefit of being great for the soil. It makes an
ideal situation for all sorts of microbiotic life that are exceptionally good
for the soil.
The down side of using this method is that you must completely cover the
area, if there are any other plants that are "infested" with the runners, it
will not work. You also must leave everything in place long enough to
completely smother the mint, or it will simply be growing in better soil.
Good luck,
Lauren
