i have followed this exchange of opinions, but not noticed anyone state specifically that if an acorn loses more than 10% of its weight in water it will not germinate. the time to plant any acorn is as soon as it falls, or, better, off the tree. you cannot keep it in the frig ( well, i cannot - it is attacked by fungus). but note that the first acorn fall should be ignored, they are grub-infested. about two weeks after this early fall, pick the acorns off the tree, inspect, and plant the sound ones at once. the delightful book by jean giorno ' the man who planted trees ', which is so often quoted in the lay press, is a spoof. this is revealed by his daughter, who wrote the charming afterword published in the 1995 edition and, for all i know, earlier editions; her addition is dated 1975). geoff --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@mallorn.com with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE PRAIRIE
