RE: Maybe the 815 Checkon is split-prone

Hi, Matthew,

Larry and Gerry spoke at the recent Ontario Provincial pumpkin growing
conference. They indicated that they were watering pretty consistently on a
daily basis and that the split in Larry's 1190 occurred after an inch of
rain fell the day before in addition. That same day a pumpkin on their
Mettler 865 plant split and Gerry's 1131 developed a visible sag line (aka
Dill ring). The fruit had tolerated really pushing the fertilizer and
watering up to that point; that is, unless there are other incidences of
splitting, I'd feel pretty good about this one. So my take on this is that
the fruit can probably handle a pretty aggressive program, but watch that
weather forecast and adjust your watering accordingly.

If Larry is watching the list at this point, he may wish to ammend or
correct anything I've said.

Subject: Maybe the 815 Checkon is split-prone

I don't doubt that some seeds have a tendancy to split. I'm planning on
trying the 815 Checkon this year because it did so amazingly well for Larry
before it split, but the fact that it split has me worried. One of my
pumpkin mentors says that he heard that other fruit grown from the 815 last
year had some really bad Dill lines, even at the 400 and 500 pound size, and
the 1190 had about three of them, I guess, so I'm worried. The 1190 DID
hold together PAST 900 pounds though, so . . .
I'm thinking that maybe the 815 is a seed that should be grown with lower
amounts of fertilizer on a smaller plant maybe. What do you all think?
