Greg:
I lost a gorgeous basketball sized fruit last year on one of my most
promising vines due to kids handling it and touching it in awe.
It is my thinking that anything that has constant contact with a fruit has
the ability to cause a contact type fungal or other infection, and/or leave
an undesireable mark or impression on the fruit.
Great pains have been taken to provide a chart and method of weight
measurement that has a high degree of accuracy as well as simplicity. No need
to risk a growing fruit with alternative methods of weight estimation, IMHO.

I am considering building an electronic dendrometer to monitor the
growth
of my pumpkins. Dendrometers typically use a strap, string or cable to
encircle the item being measured, and calculate changes in girth by
monitoring
the cable length. Has anyone experience with materials that are in
constant
contact with the pumpkin and its affects (if any) on the health of the
pumpkin?
