Larry,
   Take a pair of scissors and cut that root off, and maybe one on either
side of it. That will allow the vine to rise up. Also you should move the
pumpkin to a 90 degree angle to the vine. This allows for more room for the
shoulders when it gets big. If you don't do this, you will crack the pumpkin
off the vine when it is about 200 pounds. If you move the pumpkin to 90
degrees, only move the pumpkin one inch per day or it will snap
off........there is no warning, just a loud snap and the pumpkin is history.
