There's been a lot of negative, public posts regarding Ray Waterman lately.
I've heard lots of stories over the years, some good, some not so good. I'm
writing this neither to condome or condemn his actions, but only to relate a
personal experience.
I started growing AGs about four years ago. I did not have a computer back
then and therefore no internet access. I don't believe this mailing list was
even in operation at that point. I hadn't a clue how to grow big pumpkins. I
had read about Ray Waterman and his WPC organization and quickly joined up.
I received his seed list in the mail and quickly ordered about 20 dollars
worth. Being a rookie, I started my seeds in damp, cold soil. None
germinated and all eventually rotted. I called Ray and explained the
situation. He immediately sent another 20 dollars worth of seeds free of
charge and included instructions on how to germinate them properly. It was
already the middle of June, pretty late to be starting seeds, but my
germination rate jumped to 90% this time. I had internet email at work and
had Ray's address. Throughout the following months, I sent Ray many letters
asking all the questions that rookies ask. He responded to each and every
one, answering my questions thoroughly. By the first weekend in October, I
had 4 or 5 beautiful pumpkins ready for harvest. I took one of them to the
Allardt, TN weighoff. It weighed 310 pounds. Bearing in mind my late start
and inexperience, I regard my first season a success with Ray playing an
important role. For that, I am grateful.
For what it's worth,
Mike Nepereny
