Mike,
First, what a GREAT SITE the AGGC is. I use it a lot and appreciate all
the work that must go into maintaining it. I'm writing this info to you with
a post to the general list. I believe it to be interesting Pumpkin info on a
sleeper seed.
Don Langevin sent out a seed with some of his books that has proven to
be a surprise. Two and possible 3 NEW growers have popped big pumpkins from
it. A new state record was set in North Carolina this year from it (856lb) by
Wallace Simmons. Also Amy Dopp, another first year grower, popped a 788.6
from the seed. Don tells me another grower in Canada popped one about 743LB.
The pumpkin the seed was from had an estimated weight of 350lb. Don said
it was real ugly too. The mother was the 935 Lloyd the father was the 567.4
Wallace. Don sent the seeds out with no weight listed. Just the parents. This
has confused some of the new growers as to how to list the seed. Your site is
showing the 856 to have been grown from the 935 and pol. with the 567.4 then
left open. I've spoken to Wallace Simmons(not to be confused with Ron Wallace
the grower of the 567.4) he tells me it was just open pol. Also the 755 that
he had on the same plant also is listed wrong. It was also just opened pol.
So, both of Wallace Simmons pumpkins, (856 and 755) should both be listed as
350 Langevin,est. (935 Lloyd X 567.4 Wallace) X open. Also, Mike, It would be
a good idea to see how Amy's pumpkin is listed on the AGGC site.
Now, everyone that bought a book from Don needs to check their seeds to
see if he sent you a 935 Lloyd X 567.4 Wallace cross. Please don't call Don,
I already did. He has 1 seed left and he is planting it himself next year.
When 3 new growers pop 4 pumpkins over 700lb. on their first try that says
something about the seed. It may very well be the only 3 seeds ever planted
from this pumpkin. That says even more about the potential of this seed. Good
luck if you have one. It's got to be one of the hardest seeds to obtain right
now.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Alan R.
