Two interesting questions you ask,my thoughts are:

1.As you know seed appearance is quite varied in size,shape,color,case
texture,etc.I think it is just another example of the great genetic
varieability in these AG's.
I don't know if there is any correlation between seed appearance and the
final product we want which is a heavy one that survives to the official
weigh-off site.If anyone has ever tried to do a study on this I have not
heard of it.

2.The growth rate of the pumpkin day vs night is temperature related I would
guess.In August the most growth is at night while the daytime temperatures
are too high and in September the best growth is in the day when the night
temperatures are too low.
 I'm speaking of my own area but generally Aug nights would be similiar in
temperature to Sept days.Would this be the answer too for you in
