Pruning Vines

I have once read about someone asking about when to prune the vines
perpendicular to the freshly pollinated female flowers. The answer was to
remove them as soon as possible.
Are these the side vines (if the female is on the main) very close to the
female flower? Should one also remove any vines close to the female to
minimize stem stress while it grows?
