Cross pollination

I don't know much about plant biology (actually, I know next to nothing)
so I may be off on this one. I always thought though, that through
cross-pollination, the genetic result of the cross would not be seen
until the FOLLOWING year when the SEEDS of the crossed fruit are grown.
Is this correct or does cross pollination have a direct and immediate
effect upon the fruit where the cross pollination took place? Someone
please clear this up as I think there are those under both impressions.
