I can appreciate your position Pumkinguy. It doesn't leave the GPC with
much of a function outside of that small area of the country that has a
chance at some of it's prize money. The rules have been established for
sometime now, even before the GPC. I am not sure what incentive a group
growing in an area that for the most part leaves them no chance of
partaking in prize money, would have to become a GPC site. If their $500
a year site fee was helping to promote the sport it might make sense to
become a member, sharing this common purpose but the GPC is not
interested in promotion of the sport. Then what would that site get for
it's $500. I don't know of a thing. They would even have to buy their
own ribbons and plaques to give out as prizes. They might do better
keeping the $500 and placing it towards the success of there independent
weighoff. I think it is easier for those in your part of the country to
take your position. It works well - up there. But it's a small circle
and it becomes more and more obvious as the sport becomes more popular.
For me it's not about money, its about the love of the sport and wanting
others to partake in what you love so much. It's a great and good sport,
one that the GPC should be interested in spreading into all areas of the
country where growing "that great" pumpkin hasn't been experienced. I
have seen what a positive effect just one giant pumpkin can have on a
community. We need that.
