If the pumpkin still touches the vine, then it will rip its own stem off. Can 
you form the vine into this shape 0-c, with the c representing the vine and 
the - representing the stem? Usually you have a foot or so on each side of 
the large shoulders of the pumkin to work with. 
How big are your fruits? In circumference in inches?
I think that styrofoam blocks would just make the situation worse, if I am 
understanding what you are saying.
My pumpkins are still at ping-pong ball stage.
