dry patches on leaves

I'm getting some dry patches on some of my leaves. They are small (less
than 1") irregular-shaped patches that look and feel like newsprint.
Is this the work of an insect? A disease? The unbearable heat? Or is it
natural?
I'd appreciate any suggestions.
