terminating main vines

I'm at the point now when I am about to cease pollinating flowers. My
main vines are spilling WAY out of the garden. Everyday I pick one vine
and dig a trench for it (between 5 and 10 feet long) -- I'm getting
tired of this and would like to terminate the vines soon.
My question is, how do I terminate them (I heard the cut and bury method
is effective)?
How far past the last pumpkin do I terminate?
Does anyone just let the main vine keep going?
