Sheepish Update from SW Wis.

Well I've been excited a lot for this year and have been watching the
board steadily for information. I've learned a lot so far this year
already:

1. Sprouting your prized seed in 7-gallon pots, having them grow very
nicely in the bed of the pickup with a topper, heater, and grow lights
was good until............. I pulled truck out of garage, took off
topper, watered the plants and let them get some real sunshine!!!! Two
hours later I had baked pumpkin plants !!!!!! Only seed left was my own
from last year.
( I started over )

2. Getting plants to grow in patch was looking good. I've got my best
7-9 foot plant (even had a tiny pumpkin bud on it) mulched with mushroom
compost and then about 4 inches of freshly cut wet grass clippings which
resulted in a wonderful cooking sensation in the next two days !!!
Needless to say plant was given a burial today :(

3. Daughter who started a seed (a couple of weeks later after the one
above), never sanded it, or did much of nothing to it has found a way to
lead our family competition !! Hers is about 5 feet long and looks to
be the one to beat.

So my update is that I have 4 plants remaining, all 550Barlows (UOW)
with the biggest spurting out its fourth set of secondaries. No flowers
yet but vine is strong.

Good luck everyone, but don't kill yourself doing the mulch trick like I
did.

John, the grower of Duke.
