I have been told that lack of mature seeds is caused by excessive Nitrogen
in the soil. I believe that there is more to it than that. I think it is
caused by a lack of stress on the plant. Keep in mind that the pumpkins did
contain seeds, but they were not mature. It is possible that when the
pumpkin has no stress from lack of any nutrients or water, and temperature
and humidity etc. remain very favorable, seed maturation can be delayed.
Obviously, perfect conditions also result in very large pumpkins sometimes.
It is well known that other types of plants such as onions will produce
more seed when they have been stressed by lack of water or nutrients. In
the past year, the plants were under stess from the weather conditions but
the soil was the same as the year before and our pumpkins produced over 600
mature seeds each. Just a theory but the facts fit.
