Generally you'll leave 120-150 days for growing your plant/pumpkin. If
you intend to enter in weigh-offs, you'd figure out weighoff date, then
count back from that to get your planting date. Up here in Minnesota, I
shoot for May 1, to start my seeds indoors, and then transplant w/i 2
weeks of that. As far as vine/pumpkin growth, you'll get many theories.
Some go on leave counts, some go on vine length. Personally, I let my
main vine run to 20', then assuming I have the fruit set I want, I'll
cut end off and bury.Generally your pumpkin will be 8'-15' out on vine.
My secondary vines will be cut at 10', unless I have a fruit on it, and
these are buried to. I try to pollinate no later than July 13 to give
ample fruit growth time. Our weigh-offs are generally around Oct. 4, so
that leaves around 70-85 days for the fruit to grow. If your new at
this, a piece of advice would be to cut your tertiary vines immediatly,
preferably pinch them off when still bud phase. They'll take energy from
your plant and also clutter your growing area to the point where walking
around your plant is nearly impossible. Hope this helps, happy growing.
