Rick,

Yes it is possible to grow a big pumpkin on 500sq ft the 1092 was grown on
about that much ground.

Yes the plant will take over your garden so you have to prune the ends and
bury them when they reach the boundary.

You can grow them anyway square or rectangle.  Some use a style called the
"X-mas tree"  this is where you put the plant at the north end and let the
main vine grow to the south.  prunning all the vines that want to go north.
