Eric,
i have created a table with an old waterbed heater. i put the heater
on the table first making sure that the thermostat is under the pad.
the i cover this with a sheet of plastic i then made a 2 inch high
box around the heater. then fill the box with 1 inch of sand. the sand
helps to disperse th heat evenly. i like to keep the sand moist also
i provides some humidity, also the roots start growing into it
sometimes and it is easy to just scoop up the sand and all at planting
time. then i have a grow light that i set on 12 hours then off 12
hours. i then put a plastic sheet over the top to hold i some heat
do not seal it up to tight or else you will have problems with mold
also make sure you use a sterile seed starter mix. i also give my
plants a treatment with fungiside when they pop out of the ground
just for piece of mind. hope this helps.

Hello fellow pumpkineers,
I am new at this giant pumpkin building thing and I have a few
questions to ask of you more experienced pumpkin engineers.
First: I have and old waterbed heater and was wonderin' if in any of you
folks ever use this as a pumkinbed heater? Will it work? Or will I
just be burnin' up a perfectly good waterbed heater?
Second: I bought a 75 watt grow light bulb at the local grocer's. A
friend of mine, and pumpkin buildin' competitor, told me that you can
burn your pumpkin out on too much light. Do pumpkins need sleep time in
their comfy pumpkinbeds?
