Could be lots of caterpillars. [Are they really worms?] I wonder if
they could be the Eastern Tent caterpilliar, they completely remove
every leaf from wild cherry trees, bad on apple to. Bt dust (spores)
will kill almost all caterpillars (Lepidoptera). Go to any harware store
and read or grow your own.
The old method I use is to hold a flaming torch under the web. That
will kill the branches you get too hot. T. c. larvae are mostly black
having some yellow stripes. Very hairy so only cucukoos eat them.
I published the 11 different insect ID sheets and about 2 million
copies are in use. Your County agent should have them. Each sheet has
about 15 of the most common insects. All the North Central states +
Kentucky bought them; other states bought a few of them.
If I find a scanner, I will put all the sheets on my web site. Also
try the web. Lots of insect pictures are on the web.
