Let me relate to this topic based on my experience. Of the 32 AG's I
germinated and set out first week of March '98, many were still growing and
blooming in September. They looked a little rangy and had lots of dry leaves,
but were growing and blooming, despite their age and outside influences
(drought, 100 plus degree heat, fungus, bugs and mosaic). In fact, we planned
on leaving them in, but the rampant mosaic virus prompted Mike to pull the
plants by attrition and dispose of them.
I did notice that the stumps got huge and a thin layer of bark was forming on
them as well as the main vines. I noticed similar bark on green bell pepper
plants we grew in pots a few years ago. We expected them to be determinant,
but they kept growing and blooming, bearing fruit so long as we kept picking.
The plants lasted three years, until a frost claimed them while we were away.
Back to pumpkins in '99. We plan on planting in early January to beat the heat
this season. May stagger planting dates to see which works best. FL weather-
casters warn of a cold winter due to La Nina...this remains to be seen so far.
We are well into the higher 80's daily, with only high 60's and low 70's at
night. As a transplanted New Englander, I would welcome the cool weather for a
while.
Not sure what Tim's strategy is, but will connect with him after THXG and
discuss the possibility of a southern grower's meeting in Orlando or Tampa.
With airfares at an all-time low and an abundance of hotel rooms here (read:
cheap), it would make an ideal place for a grower's roundtable weekend
getaway. In the meantime, anyone interested in attending such a meeting,
please express your interest by private e-mail.
A great Thanksgiving to all; certainly a time to reflect on the past season
with smiles and the blessing of new friends as we put our heads together for
the '99 growing season!
To all of you in the southern hemisphere, a reminder to let us hear how you
are doing so far. It's your turn to shine... we've got a vested interest in
your success!
