Dave,
Do you have a club near you that you can join? When I joined the Southern
Ohio Giant Pumpkin Growers I was given packets of seeds. Also, if you go to
the weigh offs and seminars you can meet other growers who will very gladly
give you seeds. You can research your seeds genetics at
http://briansinsanity.com/dbtrial.html.
BigPumpkins.com is also a great site for sharing information with others and
you can use the message boards to ask questions and look at other growers
diaries. There is a seed exchange link on the site, most growers are very
generous with their seeds.
Do you have any of the How to Grow World Class Giant Pumpkin books by Don
Langevin? They are a great resource and a must read if you want to grow em
big.
And last but not least, have you had your soil tested? This is very
important, you need to have the right mix in the soil to grow these big
guys. I didn't grow a real big one, just about 450 pounds, but It is a
personal best and I learned so much this year, that next year will be even
better!
After re-reading this, it sounds like I know what I'm doing, but I really
don't. I'm just handing out the same advise I was given.
Good Luck!!
Chriss
