Answer about "seeds from seeds"

I purchased a pack of Howard Dill seeds two years ago, grown them into plants / pumpkins last year, and then took the subsequent seeds from those pumpkins and planted them this year (along with others) and have grown plants / pumpkins from them this year.

I also do this with many of my garden vegetables.  In my experiences, what you have been told would seem to be incorrect.
