Re: RIP Fat Boy
Mike,
The bottom was solid as a rock (but pale as the belly of a snake!). The
rot spot was right on top, centered in deep V rib-groove, as opposed to
one of the U-shaped ribs. I thought that I had seen a split in the skin
in there, but thought that it also could have been just a shadow. But I
had put sulpher powder on the area as a precaution. What was interesting
was that the skin looked perfect. If I hadn't tried to brush off what I
thought was a leaf particle, I would still think there was no problem.
But there was enough rot that I could stick my fingers right through.
I was amazed at the toughness of the thing. My son ran the cable from
his jeep winch around the thing, no padding, to drag it out of the yard.
Did not bother the structural integrity at all. We treated it badly,
rolling it around to get it out the gate, letting it slam down on to the
ground. Not a crack.
I mean what I said about having fun with this project. It was just an
amazing process. The only sad thing is that I have this 65 dollar red
canvas and nothing to put in except the little pumpkin. I will think
about coming to Elk Grove. Maybe if I can get my son to go...
