Duncan,
Just a few points to keep in mind.
Just watch for condensation drip spots. I once had several pots get partly
washed out from water dripping from the same spot on the fiberglass. If
you have a condensation problem, there are sprays available from greenhouse
supply houses that help solve that problem.
Of course here in the PNW our constant Nemesis, SLUGS, can do a real number
on geminating seeds. Be ever vigilant. I also leave scrap cedar siding
pieces laying around as hiding places for slugs and check them daily. Out
doors I have a reasonable tolerance to slugs munching but in my greenhouse
and propagation facilities, it's a Zero tolerance for them.
The other reason for providing some cover for seed pots is the damage
caused by foraging birds. I feed the birds and last year they discovered
that the fine gravel I use to cover seed pots and the germinating seeds
looked interesting and disturbed quite a number of pots. Assume that in
your alpine house you keep the door closed or have a screen door to keep
avians at wings length from the pots
I wonder when my packets of seed will arrive? Guess I had better go mix up
potting soil and get ready for the onslaught.
Kind Regards,
Scott
