I know it's childish, but I am fascinated by this example of what New
Scientist calls nominative determinism. McAlpine's alpines...

I've never tried propagating without some sort of cover, but after all,
plants don't rely on plastic bags in the wild. Presumably, provided that
the compost stays moist, there should be no problem - and the air moving
about would reduce the problem with fungal growth.

Why not try two batches of seeds, one with and one without a cover and
report back?
