Re: Salvia glutinosa

<Salvia glutinosa does not necessarily need GA-3 to germinate, but I
have germinated it at 20 C ( 70 F), like the majority of Salvias.
Species from very arid regions might have a GA-3 requirement though.>

Paul: You are quite right, because I grew my mother plants (obtained
from commercial sources) at simple warm temperatures originally. And
this has been the mystery. For over 10 years now, I have not been able
to germinate my own seed using any method (I have tried them all,
including extensive dry storage to see if that was a factor, light,
dark, cold, etc...). Not until this year, when I finally thought to try
GA-3 did I get any results: any amazing results: 100% germination in
less than 2 days!!!

I had discussed this species with someone who presented a lecture on
Salvias at the NARGS winter study weekend in North Carolina this January
and he was the one to suggest GA-3. Apparantly this species, in
particular, has been the subject of considerable research due to the
mystery of its germination.
