Concerning recommendations for use of thyme, sage, etc. or esential oils:
I think anyone working with plant propagation should be open to
ideas -- many plants can be very difficult, then easy when you find the
right combination. But -- keep in mind that essential oils of mints and
other dryland plants may also function as allelopathic chemicals. [That
is, secretions into the soils that inhibit other species within the drip
line of the secretor.....
This can't be strong in thymes, since they mix well in gardens,
but I can imagine that these essential oils, or other extracts from mints
would inhibit rooting for some subjects.
If the concern is to avoid use of any strong chemical, including
household bleach, you could depend on boiling water for containers and
soil surface.
