Named hostas should be registered. Then we have seedlings. These should be
sold as such, with the exception of pure species. A lot are sold as being
"from" or ex the mother's name, pollen parent unknown. I have enough
collections without adding hostas to the list. Too many names to keep track
of.... I do, halfway as a joke, sell hosta seedlings that are labelled
"seedlings from good parents, you can name". Frankly, I can get enough of
the type of hostas that I like from seed, although I will admit to having
to have a few named ones. There were some I just couldn't get along
without! There is quite a large segment of the population that do not care
about registration, or names, or whatever. At least, they should be weaned
toward better and more modern types. Of course they could buy good named
ones for very little, but they also can buy even better seedlings for
less.... Takes all kinds. If you are going to collect, you should know the
names of the ones you want, and what they look like. If they are not true
to name, as they should be, go right back to where you bought them and get
your money back, or if this is not possible, threaten them with lots of bad
publicity. This is a case of real deceptive practices..... Nancy
