Cindy,
If your soil drains well you should be OK with 2" per week. I would try to
go with a lesser amount and maybe spot water certain plants. Some time back
the subject of water came up on the hosta robin. I was surprised at the
varied responses. Some of the hosta robins never water mature hostas and
others water up to 3" per week.
Young rapidly growing trees can take a lot of change. With large mature
trees go slow. There is not a lot of research on mature trees. I am glad
you care about your trees like you do. I wish I could give a more concrete
answer to your watering questions.
Moderation in changes for mature trees can prolong their lives.
