Hello Mark,
Rust has become a problem for many up an down the East Coast over the last
few years. Both in the wild and in gardens. No one seems to have an answer
as to exactly why. Personally I am marking quite a bit of the spread down
to our crazy stressful springs the past two years. I did not encounter this
problem until two years ago in my garden. Since I have a nursery I
immediately destroyed mine for I can not take a chance on spreading the
rust spoors. Some species are more likely to get the rust than others. A.
triphyllum and A. amumrense are two of the first to show signs. I have not
seen rust on any of my later emerging Arisaema such as the Green Dragon and
a long list of others.
I had rust occur on one stand of Jack in the garden and in a drier part of
the garden another stand stayed completely clean. See that in the wild as
well.
Arisaema seeds are not all that difficult to germinate. In fact, I traded
with a friend in Germany for A. triphyllum since the problem of rust has
not shown up there and I can get some clean stock started.
There has been a lot of talk of chemical control rather than removal, but
I opted for removing the offenders and restarting my stands with clean
plants in another part of the garden. I especially seek good air
circulation and well drained.
Another good reason NOT to collect plants from the wild. Don't
misunderstand.. I am not saying you have, Mark. Just warning others to be
cautious about collecting "free" plants Mother Nature has provided just for
them.
