We have grown both plants for a number of years. The astilboides hasn't been slow to establish here as it has been for Diane. We grow both plants in partial shade and the soil is heavy, moist clay. Because you are in quite a different climate I had a look at Allan Armitage's book on herbaceous perennials. He is a professor of horticulture at the University of Georgia in Athens. He too recommends moist and shady conditions for both plants. The book I have is the earliest edition and he uses alternate names (Rodgersia and Peltiphyllum) which I believe have been superceded.
And Al if you would like to see these two plants and how they grow here for us let me know off list and we will send you a JPEG photo.

Question: I was just recently exposed to two beautiful large leaved plants, have acquired them from mail order, but they are not doing that well (barely surviving). One is Astilboides tabularis and the other is Darmera Peltata, ‘Umbrella Plant’.
Any cultural information you can give would be greatly appreciated.
