Hi John,
I can't give you advice about your zone since I am in Zone 8b/9 here in
Navasota/Houston, but I can offer this suggestion to those who live in the
Gulf Coast area. Japanese Maples will scorch in our climate if planted in
full sun. We should treat them as understory trees, shaded by taller growing
varieties and provide them with filtered shade, or at least protection from
the afternoon sun.
Mine is planted under these conditions and maintains it's coloration
beautifully. Your JMs should also be sited in a non windy area, as this can
damage the foliage.
As with many other plants, generally the farther north you are the more sun a
plant can take. I have learned that some plants requiring full sun will also
flourish in dappled sun for me in my zone, since the summers here are truly
brutal on both plants and humans alike!
Anyway, I am sure that you will get lots of advice for your zone from others
on the list.
Happy Gardening,
Pam Adkins
