Hello again James,
I think if I were you I would give the Hellebores a shot in the garden.
These species on these have a range from Slovenia to Serbia and sown into
Macedonia. Now that is a long string of changes to weather through. I also
know that they are grown successfully in Australia and receive seeds from
there.
I would give them an extra large hole for planting filled with a good rich
mix of compost and humus and place them in a bit more shade than I would
use here. Mulch well and do not let completely dry out, but don't overwater
either. These are tough plants. See if the library has a copy of The
Gardener's Guide to Growing Hellebores by Strangman & Rice.
