Re: Fw: Polygonatums

Hello Cindy,
You missed a good one.... 529 shade gardeners this year..... classes went
smoothly, good topics. I took "Top 10 Ferns", "Moss Gardening", "Designing for
Foliage" and was a teacher the other two sessions. Actually had wonderful weather
this time........ I have already signed up to teach next year. Will look for you
there in 2002.
Polygonatums, like a few other popular perennials, has a bit of confusion build
in......
Fulcatum actually does not show up all that often on this side of the pond....
it may be labeled as such, but if you are ordering the variegated cultivar, you
will probably receive P. odoratum thunbergii variegata. Sometimes you will receive
the little P. humile. The names, however, are not interchangeable.. they are all
different plants.
Multiflorum in any form should do fine in your area. Pretty vigorous plant. P.
x "V. Song" is a selection or hybrid off of multiflorum. Curvistylum,
verticillatum rubrum, I would plant in a protected area where you garden at least
in the beginning until you see how they will. perform.... just as a precaution.
Better to be safe than sorry. They are winter dormant, so a good mulch should
carry them through.

Subject: [SG] Fw: Polygonatums

Hi Gene and others,

I know Gene's away at Hosta College (and I'm envious!). I hope others will know
about some of these plants to help me out while he's gone. I'm looking in
Munchkin Nursery catalog at all the different Polygonatums. I had no idea there
were so many kinds, but I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.

I only have 3 kinds. One of them I thought was P. humile, until I just found a
label in my box of labels that said P. fulcatum. Are these one and the same or
similar?

I also have P. biflorum and P. odoratum. Now I want to try a couple new ones.
Even though I live in zone 4a, I do grow quite a few zone 5 plants. What would
everyone suggest out of the following in the catalog?

P. multiflorum
P. curvistylum
P.odoratum 'Flore Pleno'
P. verticillatum rubrum
P. x hybrid 'Valerie's song'

Thanks for any and all info about these!
