Hi, Elaine.  I have a REALLY small fern with black stems - Thelipteris
novaeborencis (might have the specific name wrong).  I grow it among rocks,
and it has never gotten more than several inches long.  Dryopteris
wallichiana has blackish stems; I don't know how large it usually gets, but
is about 10" tall in my garden.
