Hi again Elaine and everyone
        Maiden Hair ferns do have black stems. Where I live in the northeast
corner of Iowa it has never been glaciated like most of the midwest. I
have identified about a half a dozen kinds of ferns here(if I remember
right, I haven't looked at them for a couple of years now). In one spot
at the base of a cut in the limestone to make a road there are just
thousands of Maiden Hair ferns. It has to be very alkaline because the
water pours out of the cliff right onto them. Also very pretty.
