Sometimes we have no idea what's in our immediate vicinity.  Bob, there's a
fascinating article available about remnants of the last Ice Age in
northeastern Iowa printed in the March 1, 1994 issue (vol.42, #3) of "The
Iowan."  It was reprinted with permission in The Seed Savers 1996 Summer
Edition.  These algific talus slopes are cold air pockets, even today,
preserving flora and fauna from extinction.  You are right in that that
area was not glaciated, although the rest of Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin
were, but the retreating glaciers did have their erosive way on that
plateau, creating these cold air shafts.  The plants protected by these low
temps are, to say the least, endangered.  If you haven't seen this article,
