There are several small Astilbe but not that small, unless you
want to grow the spreading (and very lovely) A. plumila
chinensis, which is an autumn bloomer.
However, I'll tell you what I just put in between 2 bleeding
hearts that I think is very nice. There is a *very* dwarf
Aruncus called A. aethusifolius. It is like an ultra mini
version of the goatsbeard with which we are more familiar, with
a very tightly mounding habit. It will top out at 12" x 24" and
has that same sort of aruncus/astilbe flower spikes. It blooms
in summer. A very, very nice little plant. Like it's parent it
does best in a rich, humusy, moist woodland soil in part sun to
bright shade.
Clyde, you need to fill out your Astilbe cultivar collection so
you will have blooming Astilbe all season long. :)
