Sheila, my Siberian irises are grown in ordinary beds, though the soil has
over the years become extraordinary. It started out as rich loam, and I
have mulched with chopped leaves for enough years that the soil has really
fine tilth. You have soil on top of sand? That may account for a water
shortage, I suppose. I don't give my Siberians extra water. I imagine
that if I did, they might perform better. But they perform pretty well
now, so I'm satisfied. You might try polymer crystals in the root area and
see what happens.
