Clyde, I'm no expert on abutilons! I just happen to have one plant that
has lived with me in a large hanging basket for about 15 years, an orangey
red. It blooms from Dec to June or July and is never troubled by pests or
diseases. Those are its good points. The bad ones are that it has a loose,
rangy growth habit that would be improved by more frequent tip pinching
and it takes up a good bit of room. I fertilize it once a year with weak
Miracle-Gro and water it when I remember to. And I give it the best light
I can provide. I have never put it outside for the summer and never
repotted it. Sunset says you should pinch the heck out of it and keep the
soil constantly moist. I'm always vowing to do better but I keep on in the
same way. Still, it seems content. I've just bought A. 'Huntington Pink'
and only hope that it is as much a survivor as Old Faithful.
If anybody out there IS an expert on abutilons, I hope they will speak up.
I could use some tips myself!
