Problem with slugs

Hello,
Would appreciate any advice on eliminating slugs from the garden.  My flower beds and even planters are inundated and my plants look just awful.  I've used the beer and diametcious remedies, but they have proved futile.  My hostas, impatients, dahilas are especially hard hit.  I have pets..cats and so have stayed away from any poisons.
